The art of embroidery and weaving is a tradition that is also rooted in the municipality of Barcelos, in particular in the parish of Carreira, with the well-known Embroidery of Crivo de S. Miguel da Carreira an ancient tradition, with very specific characteristics that, due to its shapes and minutia differs from other Minho embroidery.
In Barcelos there are still artisans who weave on traditional looms and embroider in the traditional way, preserving knowledge and techniques that for years were the basis of the economy of some parishes. In addition to sieve embroidery, the county’s artisans also produce other types of high-quality items, tailored to each individual’s taste and style, namely valentine’s handkerchiefs, feather rugs and pillows (unique in Portugal), “carpets tucked in and pulled”, towels, among many other meticulous works linked to the art of embroidery and weaving.
