Municipal Library
A modern building, designed by Siza Vieira

The Municipal Library of Viana do Castelo opened to the public on January 20, 2008. It is a building designed by Arch. Álvaro Siza Vieira, located next to the river Lima, equipped with reading spaces for adults and children, an area for consulting newspapers and magazines and multimedia sections for watching films, listening to music and consulting the Internet. The rooms are flooded with natural light thanks to original skylights and large panoramic windows overlooking the Lima river and the historic center.
This council equipment has a total area of 3,130 square meters divided over two floors, the lower floor being used for technical services, specialized work and consultation offices, storage and customer service areas, with the upper floor reserved for reading rooms for adults and children.

The Municipal Library of Viana do Castelo was designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira and is located at the east end of Praça da Liberdade, in the riverside area of Viana do Castelo, right on the waterfront.
Since its founding in 1888, the library has known six “mansions”, now facing the river Lima and which, for many, is a mixture of a work of art and a space for reading.
Construction began on the new building in January 2004 and was inaugurated on January 20, 2008, as part of the celebrations for the 750th anniversary of the granting of the Charter to Viana.
The new Municipal Library of Viana do Castelo has a total area of 3130 square meters, divided over two floors. The volume of the library is about 1850 square meters, with a central void on the ground floor, allowing a view over the river Lima from the north of the structure obtained by raising the first floor. It includes a workroom, a multimedia, video and audio section, several reading areas, an area for the European Information and Documentation Center, and another for adult self-training and distance learning. On the lower floor, technical services, work and specialty consultation offices, storage and service areas are installed. On the top floor of the new infrastructure are the three main reading rooms, namely the Sala Luís de Camões. The other two rooms were named after José Saramago and Fernando Pessoa.
The younger ones also have their own space, which does not collide with the rest of the reading area, with a story room, expression workshop and their own reading areas.
The building was built in white concrete, which covers a complex iron structure, with a granite base. The estate consists of around one hundred thousand books and documents from the Municipality of Viana do Castelo, divided into three funds: free consultation books, periodicals and older collections, the latter with more limited access.
