Clube Bonjardim, created on February 20, 1885, has played a decisive role in the progress of Cernache do Bonjardim throughout its history. It was founded by a group of men linked to the most important families in the town, including Commander Libânio Vaz Serra, Rufino Vitória Matos, António Correia da Silva or José António Silva Serra. One of the main drivers of this collective was the illustrious republican and distinguished lawyer Abílio Marçal, who presided over the destinies of Clube Bonjardim between 1911 and 1915.
Theatro Bom Jardim (name it adopted in the early days) would be inaugurated on April 17, 1892, Easter Sunday. The plays “Tio Padre”, “Dois Politicos” and “30 Buttons” appeared on stage that day. This house was renamed Teatro Taborda, in 1899, after the historic visit of actor Taborda and composer Alfredo Keil (author of the National Anthem) to Cernache do Bonjardim, where they performed for four days.
Adjacent to this building, there is a garden, built in 1942, in which cultural events can be held, as well as various sports activities, as well as a playground and several rest areas with benches and tables. In this garden there is also an imposing and centennial cork oak, recently classified due to its rare species, as well as its large size.
Currently, Clube Bonjardim is a private cultural association.
