The Mata Nacional do Vimeiro is located in the municipality of Alcobaça and extends over 267 hectares, the main species being maritime pine (60% of the area), followed by eucalyptus (8% of the area) and cork oak (6% of the area). It consists of four woods: the woods of Roda, Gaio, Ribeira and Canto.
The Mata Nacional do Vimeiro is wooded over an area of 247 hectares, the main species being maritime pine (60% of the area of the Forest), followed by eucalyptus (8% of the area, destined for the production of quality wood) and cork oak. (6% of the Mata area). It also has a remarkable patch of Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea subsp. broteroi), with an area of about 20 hectares which, together with the Pena da Gouvinha fountain and the Picnic Parks, create a natural landscape of rare beauty. At the level of the shrub layer there are strawberry trees, heathers, gorse, but also some acacias and brambles. Close to the ground we find some aromatic herbs and a great diversity of mushrooms. The most typical fauna is the red squirrel, the mongoose, the wild boar, the buzzard eagle and the jay. It is possible to appreciate the unique environmental heritage of the region, both for the size of the forest area and for the species that constitute it.
Since July 2020, a marked route has been available in the Mata Nacional do Vimeiro, which allows nature lovers to discover this immense environmental heritage in a safe way.
